Nice start. To the series, that is.
Jessie Darker is a kick-ass-and-take-names kind of girl - a good thing since she's half demon (her dad hold dual citizenship in hell) and works past-time at her mom's detective/"otherworlder" agency. Part time work kicking demonic ass, that is. Things are going along nicely until the Seven Deadly Sins are released from their box...in Jessie's town...by Jessie's dad. Yeah, it wasn't his fault, but it still stinks.
Except that one of those sins is currently ensconced in the body of a 150-year-old, terminally hot, teenager....
What actually goes on is fairly formulaic but still nicely done; one can't help but be captivated by Jessie's snarky narration and an indomitable spirit that leads her to the gates of hell itself in quest of salvation for those humans forced to host the Sins. Especially, salvation for Lukas, the 18-going-on-150 year old she has fallen in love with and really doesn't want to lose.
By the end of the story we've accumulated a nice core of characters to enliven future Darker tales Jessie, of course; her mother, Klaire, and her demon father, Damien; Lukas; Jessies's best friend Kendra, a novice witch; and Smoky, a demon-possessed corgi who decides that Jessie is now ins his charge. A fun group and a fun read.
I eagerly await Ms. Accardo's next visit to the Darker side.
Jus Accardo you have disappointed me!
I LOVE the Denazen series so when I heard about this book I was sooo excited for another awesomely snarky female lead. Unfortunately it fell flat. Don't get me wrong it's an okay book but my expectations were so high going in that I can't get over my disappointment. Jessie Darker was snarky but not in a good way and it was hard to get over her obvious lust/insta love for Lukas. More than anything Jessie just flat out annoyed me.
I also had a hard time going along with the story. At times it seemed like the story was moving unrealistically fast and other times it drug on. There was plenty going on and a lot of unexpected realizations but I just wanted it to be so much more. The ending was the only time I got really into the book but I still don't think I will read the next one.
My advice to you is if you are familiar with Accardo don't go in expecting anything, rather have an open mind so that maybe you will have a better chance of enjoying the book.
When I read the first sample chapter of Darker Days I was extremely intruiged by the main characters wit and fearlessness. Jessie has a certain confidence that draws you in and makes you want to see what kind of trouble she will get into next. Needless to say, I purchased the book right after my sample ended.
There were moments in this book that I loved, and moments where I felt angry at the author. A lot of the book felt rushed, and I wanted more detail an depth into the scenes that had the larger impacts on Jessies fate. It was as if the beginning and end were perfectly planned out, but the author struggled during the middle to tie everything together. I guess my biggest issue was just that the storyline and characters were great, and it just felt as if they didnt quite live up to their potential.
I gave the book 4 stars because I genuinely enjoyed it. It was better than a lot of books I have read lately. I can't say it was one of my favorites, but it was good. The love stories are sweet and definitely the authors strong suit, and there were quite a few laugh out loud moments and even some moments where you might want to tear up a little. Overall, I recommend it for young adults that love a strong female lead character and a little bit of romance.
Jessie Darker does not have a normal life. Underneath the average high school student is the girl who fights things that go bump in the night. Her mom wants her to have a semi-normal life but, that's kind of hard to do when your in their line of work. Luckily for Jessie, she actually likes what she does. Little does she know her life is about to change when Lukas Scott walks in. His request seems like it shouldn't be terrible to complete. However, it comes with consequences that neither Jessie nor her mom saw coming. Innocent lives are at risk and their time to complete the task is minimal. Will Jessie and her mom be able to get the Sins back in the box?
Jessie and Lukas both have their secrets. Lukas struggles with his on almost a daily basis. It is hard for him to stay in control. When a ghost from his past turns up, things get crazy. Jessie does her best to have her life and work at the agency. I felt like she didn't really get to do a lot of things kids her age do. I mean the seven sins were on the loose which made things harder. She is surrounded by the supernatural. Despite her mom telling her to stay out of it Jessie inserts herself into investigation. This leads to some very dangerous situations. Especially since Jessie is developing feelings for Lukas...and his time is limited.
I do love the dynamic between Lukas and Jessie. Lukas with his old fashion self and Jessie very upfront and different from what he is used to. They are so perfect for each other it hurts. Since their time is limited things heat up quick between them. I loved it!! They fell fast and hard for each other. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!
This was yet another great start to a new series. I have liked all the books by this author and intend to keep reading them. I hope I don't have to wait to long for the next one in this series!
